Parramatta is located at the geographic and demographic heart of Australia's largest city and is the gateway to Western Sydney Shortly after arriving at Sydney Cove, Captain Phillip sailed up the Parramatta River in search of land to grow crops that would save the new settlers from almost certain starvation. He found it at Rosehill, later renamed Parramatta, and the survival of the colony was assured.

Parramatta soon became a booming commercial centre, a tradition it carries on today.

'Parramatta is an open-air museum,' according to the Lord Mayor.
'History is everywhere - in our parks, buildings and bridges.'

As well as modern office buildings and historic homes, Parramatta also offers a relaxed and cosmopolitan lifestyle. Residents and visitors can dine alfresco in one of the many outdoor restaurants and cafes, or take a stroll along the Parramatta River on themed walkways featuring indigenous art. Culture buffs can take in a show at the Riverside Theatre or view an exhibition at the Parramatta Heritage Centre, while sports enthusiasts might prefer Rosehill Racecourse, Parramatta Stadium or Parramatta Speedway.

The city also offers a range of housing options - from units and townhouses to the traditional 'Aussie' home with a backyard and a pool. These residential areas are complemented by an abundance of natural parklands, including Parramatta Regional Park and lake Parramatta Reserve.
